What Does it Take to Become a CMA?

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Or hold a professional certification. For a list of approved certifications, contact our team.
  • If there is no bachelor’s degree, professional certification or experience, you can sit for the exams and fulfill educational and experience requirements within 7 years of passing.

Experience

  • Requires two years of experience in management accounting and/or financial management.
  • This requirement may be completed prior to or within 7 years of passing the exam
  • Or continuous part-time positions of 20 hours per week*

Exam

  • Pass the two-part exam administered by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA)

Part I: Financial Planning, Performance, and Analytics

Duration: 4 hours
Format: 100 multiple choice questions and two 30-minute essay questions

Exam passing score:

To pass, you’ll need a minimum score of 360 (on a scale of 0-500).

Where can I take the exam?

You will need to schedule your exams to fall within one of the three testing windows each year. These take place in:

January-Feb | May-June | September-October
